Exclusive – In-demand Southampton duo NOT FOR SALE, insists Saints chairman

first_imgSouthampton chairman Ralph Krueger has told talkSPORT that in-demand Saints stars Jay Rodriguez and Morgan Schneiderlin will not leave St Mary’s under any circumstances this summer. The Saints are desperate to halt the mass exodus of stars from the club, having already seen captain Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren join Liverpool, England starlet Luke Shaw move to Man United and young right-back Calum Chambers sign for Arsenal. And recent reports suggest Rodriguez and Schneiderlin could be the next to leave, with Tottenham thought to be plotting a double swoop for the pair.Rodriguez has been strongly linked with a reunion with former manager Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs, though Liverpool have also reportedly joined the chase having pulled the plug on their move for Loic Remy.France international Schneiderlin, meanwhile, is a long-term target for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, though the Gunners’ north London rivals are reportedly in pole position to sign the midfielder. But the Saints chief has dismissed the ongoing rumours, insisting the duo are not for sale.“It’s important for everybody to hear that we see Jay Rodriguez and Morgan Schneiderlin as players in the core that [new manager] Ronald Koeman would like to build around at the club,” Krueger told Drivetime.“They will be playing for us this season, they’re definitely not leaving Southampton. I don’t where these stories have come from.”The chairman also offered an explanation to Saints fans over the sale of some of their brightest stars this summer, insisting their exit was for the best interest for the future development of the team.He added: “We did go into this transfer window without any players for sale, but situations have evolved since then.“We looked at every situation individually, we didn’t have any players up for sale but some wanted shortcuts to the Champions League.“We had a strategy in place that if the circumstances came together on our terms and we could get the premium price for a player, we would make the deal. That is what has happened with all the transfers to date this summer.“But we’re at a point now where we are not going to sell Rodriguez or Schneiderlin, we’re in the building process now. We’re in negations and we look forward to adding to the squad and reinvesting these funds.”last_img
