YouTube in 2009: One Video That Ruled Them All

first_imgRelated Posts A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… YouTube posted its year in review stats this morning and Susan Boyle’s singing performance was listed as the most popular video of the year. That video was, in fact, almost four times as popular as numbers two through five – videos including David After the Dentist, that insipid wedding dance and the trailer for the vampire movie New Moon. With more than 120 million views, Boyle’s video demonstrates a lot of things about YouTube, now one of the world’s largest search engines. It’s an inspiring video that challenges expectations about gender and age with a story of personal triumph. It’s also something that traditional media pulled off better than user generated content probably could have. The video has had embedding turned off on YouTube but it’s really quite compelling. It’s embarrassing to see how people talk down to an older woman, whose appearance falls outside of television’s definition of beauty. It’s moving to see her triumph in the performance. It’s bittersweet to consider that the television franchise souped up the video of her performance, turning a woman worthy of respect into a freak because of her beautiful, youthful voice and profiting handsomely while she went on to have psychological issues because of the resulting public pressure. That’s what people on the Internet watched this year, though. That and a small child speaking under the influence of dental medication. Pinterest’s New “Questions” Feature Might Be The Key To Visual Search

first_imgPinterest is testing an unnamed Q&A feature, the visual search company confirmed to ReadWrite.See also: Pinterest Is Changing The Way We BlogThe feature came to light after developer Tom Waddington blogged about noticing a blank “Questions” tab on his Pinterest account for Cut Out & Keep, a craft community he helped found in 2007. A quick scroll through the code indicated the feature was almost ready to be rolled out. When I reached out to Pinterest, a spokesperson confirmed that it wasn’t a coincidence. “We’re currently testing the ability to ask and answer questions in a more structured way on Pins, with a small group of Pinners,” the spokesperson said in an email. With meteoric growth and billions of pins, Pinterest has nailed down horizontal expansion. Over the past year, its focus has instead moved to verticals—improving the quality of information in each Pinterest category as opposed to the number of categories, which is already quite expansive. One way Pinterest is improving the quality of its information is with Rich Pins, which are images about specific topics that are tagged with relevant metadata. For example, Recipe Pins, a type of Rich Pin, automatically come with recipes attached because Pinterest can uniquely recognize the link type as a recipe.See also: In Challenge To Google, Pinterest Launches Guided SearchMost recently, Pinterest unveiled Guided Search, a search function that establishes the company’s most bold experiment yet into visual search. Guided Search works a bit like an autocomplete function, suggesting related keywords when a user types in just one thing. For instance, if you type “burgers,” Pinterest might suggest “turkey” or “vegan.”Guided Search indicates a desire on Pinterest’s part to help you search for answers you didn’t know you wanted yet. The unnamed Q&A feature could take this a step further. Pinners already ask questions on Pinterest—even though there isn’t a designated space to do so. Instead, people query in the comments on a specific pin. As pins are repeatedly repinned onto many users boards, the same questions sometimes get asked over and over again.See also: Why Pinterest Is The Google Competitor You Weren’t ExpectingRight now, the unnamed Q&A feature is a blank page, so we don’t really know what it’ll look like yet. But if it ends up being a list of frequently asked questions about a pinner’s images, it might answer questions browsers didn’t know they had yet and steer the conversation toward answers they didn’t yet know they wanted. As CEO Ben Silbermann said when revealing Guided Search:“In the future, search will be a discovery tool. Pinterest at its heart is about discovering things you didn’t even know were there.”A Pinterest Q&A feature might be part of his campaign to accomplish just that.Photo by Hannah Born Tags:#Guided Search#Pinterest#Rich Pins#The Future of Search#visual web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketcenter_img lauren orsini Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…last_img read more

4th Test: India thrashed again, slip to No. 3 in Test rankings

first_imgSachin Tendulkar came agonisingly close to a phenomenal 100th international century before a pathetic India slumped to an innings and eight runs defeat in the fourth and final cricket Test to give a ruthless England a resounding 4-0 series win at The Oval cricket ground in London on Monday. Score | PicturesNeeding to bat out the entire fifth day to save the game, Tendulkar (91) led a spirited fightback alongwith Amit Mishra (84) but the complexion of the game changed dramatically after their dismissals as the visitors lost as many as seven wickets for a mere 21 runs to be all out for 283 in the second innings just at the stroke of tea. With this emphatic victory, England officially crowned themselves the number one team in Test rankings with 125 points followed by South Africa with 118 points. The Indians, who started the series as the number one Test team, surrendered the number one tag after losing the third Test in Birmingham and have now slipped to the number three position following the 4-0 whitewash.Spinner Graeme Swann was the wrecker-in-chief for England with with impressive figures of six for 106 while Stuart Broad chipped in with two wickets.Resuming at the overnight total of 129 for three, Tendulkar and Mishra raised hopes of drawing the game as the duo put on 144 runs for the fourth wicket but Mishra’s departure virtually opened up the floodgates as none of the Indian batsmen showed the determination to hang around for long. The visitors suffered a stunning collapse, losing their last seven wickets for 21 runs, a reflection of the caputilation which has been a feature right through the series.advertisementTendulkar and Mishra, who resumed this morning, continued the good work for the first 40 minutes after lunch but then both were gone in quick succession.Mishra started the rot when he played inside the line to a Graeme Swann delivery and his off-stump was pegged back. The gusty knock by the leg-spinner lasted for 184 minutes and 141 balls and his 84 runs included 10 fours. From the other end, India suffered the double blow when Tendulkar was given out leg before wicket which appeared a harsh decision as the Tim Bresnan delivery appeared to be heading down the leg stump.Television replays showed that the ball would have hit the top of the leg stump.Tendulkar made his 91 runs in 239-minutes and 172-ball innings, slamming 11 fours. It was not the best of his knock as he was dropped on scores of 70 and 85 off Swann and there was also a stumping against the off-spinner which went abegging last night.India?s innings unfolded quickly as Suresh Raina took his second duck from the match, out again to Swann but this time leg-before-wicket.England claimed the second new ball as soon as it was due and its? effect was immediately apparent. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (3) slashed at a wide delivery from Stuart Broad and was caught at second slip.RP Singh departed in the same over when he edged an outswinger into the gloves of wicketkeeper Matt Prior.Gautam Gambhir came out to bat at number eight and was hit on his helmet by a rising delivery from James Anderson. After six overs by the medium-pacers, off-spinner Swann was brought into attack and there was a loud claim for a catch in close-in cordon off Ishant Sharma which was upheld by umpire Rod Tucker. But the batsman asked for a review on the decision and the replays showed there was no contact with either the bat or the gloves.Swann also claimed the wicket of Gambhir when the left-hander charged down the wicket and only spliced a catch to Eoin Morgan at gully.-With PTI inputslast_img read more
