The state of Mumia

first_imgMumia Abu-Jamal, 2019.The following lightly edited commentary appeared on Prison Radio on May 12.  I don’t usually do this. This is discussing myself. I find it far more interesting to tell the stories of others, the revolving globe on which we dwell and the stories spawned by the fragile human condition and the struggles of humanity for liberation. But I digress, uncomfortably. This commentary is about the commentator. Several weeks ago I underwent a medical procedure known as open heart surgery, a double bypass, after it was learned that two vessels beating through my heart have significant blockages that impaired heart function. This impairment was fixed by extremely well-trained and young cardiologists, who had extensive experience in this intricate surgical procedure. I tell you I had no clue whatsoever that I suffered from such a disease. Now, to be perfectly honest, I feel fine. Indeed, I feel more energetic than usual!I thank you all, my family and friends, for your love and support.Onwards to freedom with all my heart. From imprisoned nation — Mumia Abu-Jamal FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

first_imgChelsea were on the verge of the first league defeat of Guus Hiddink’s second spell in charge after Diego Costa missed a great opportunity to equalise. The Spain striker, who was also involved in some heated arguments during the second half, met Eden Hazard’s inviting cross with a volley but failed to keep it down.Hazard and Cesar Azpilicueta both drilled shots high and wide and John Obi Mikel nodded off target as Chelsea tried to get back on terms. At half-time, Hiddink brought on Kenedy to play at left-back and removed Baba Rahman, whose error had helped Saints take the lead a few minutes before the break.Pedro had to come off after just seven minutes after tweaking a leg muscle, and the Blues paid the price for a sluggish start shortly before half-time.He misjudged a header and Shane Long nipped in between Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill before poking past a hesitant Thibaut Courtois in goal.Pedro limped off in the opening minutes of the game, to be replaced by Oscar. He had the Blues’ first shot on target which was comfortably gathered by Fraser Forster, who broke a club top flight record of 667 minutes without conceding a goal.Southampton: Forster; Van Dijk, Fonte, Bertrand; Cedric, Clasie, Romeu, Davis, Targett; Long, Austin.Subs: Stekelenburg, Yoshida, Martina, Ward-Prowse, Mane, Tadic, Pelle.Chelsea: Courtois; Azpilicueta, Cahill, Ivanovic, Baba (Kenedy 46); Mikel, Fabregas; Pedro (Oscar 7), Willian, Hazard; Costa.Subs: Begovic, Matic, Loftus-Cheek, Kenedy, Oscar, Traore, Remy.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

GMSA begins exporting to Kenya

first_img13 March 2012 General Motors South Africa (GMSA) began exporting Isuzu KB pick-ups to Kenya on the weekend, and is looking to further expand its exports of the locally assembled light commercial vehicles – both right- and left-hand drive – into key sub-Saharan Africa markets. GMSA already exports the popular pick-up, assembled at the company’s Struandale plant in Port Elizabeth, to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Mauritius – all right-hand drive markets. Both right- and left-hand drive GMSA exports manager and East Africa MD Rita Kavashe told Engineering News, however, that when the company begins production of the sixth-generation Isuzu KB in the first half of 2013, this would be the first time that the vehicle is built in South Africa in both right- and left-hand drive. “This will open up new opportunities for us to export the Isuzu KB beyond our existing markets to rapidly growing countries like Angola and Nigeria,” Kavashe said. “With all the development happening in sub-Saharan Africa as countries improve road infrastructure, agriculture and invest in the construction of new buildings, there is an opportunity to sell our tough commercial vehicles in these markets.” R1-billion investment According to Business Report, GMSA is currently investing R1-billion in three new vehicle assembly programmes – for the Chevrolet Utility, which began production at the end of 2012, the new Chevrolet Spark, due later this month, and the new-generation Isuzu KB. Engineering News notes that increased export volumes will help the company reach the incentive threshold – of 50 000 units a year – under the government’s new Automotive Production and Development Plan, which comes into effect in 2013. SAA, Post Office turnaround plans working

first_img28 May 2015Efforts to turn around the performance of the national carrier, South African Airways (SAA), have begun to bear fruit, according to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.“The going concern status of the airline has been restored, costs have been reduced and operational efficiency is improving,” the deputy president said yesterday.“We have confidence that the newly developed long-term turnaround strategy will ensure that SAA continues to play a crucial role in facilitating commerce and tourism within our country and abroad.”He was speaking during the Presidency Budget Vote in Parliament. In December, President Jacob Zuma assigned Ramaphosa to oversee the turnaround of SAA, the South African Post Office and Eskom, three critical state-owned companies that are drivers of the economy.SAA was also transferred from the Department of Public Enterprises to National Treasury.“We are also encouraged by progress at the South African Post Office, where the strategic turnaround plan has been finalised for submission to [the] Cabinet,” Ramaphosa said. The administrator appointed by Telecommunications and Postal Services Minister Siyabonga Cwele in 2014 had undertaken a thorough diagnostic review of the challenges at the post office, and a business model that was better suited to the changing postal services environment had been developed. With regards to Eskom, progress had been made in the implementation of the government’s plan to stabilise the utility. Ramaphosa said Eskom would regain its strength in the country’s economy.“As the supplier of around 95% of the country’s electricity, Eskom is critical to our economic growth and sustainability. As we are all acutely aware, the company has been experiencing severe generation constraints, exacerbated by significant operational and financial challenges.”The Presidency welcomed the appointment of Eskom acting chief executive Brian Molefe.Source: SAnews.govlast_img read more

House offers changes to DeWine’s gas tax proposal

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The proposed “gas tax” by Gov. Mike DeWine in the State transportation budget would raise the state’s tax of fuel from the current 28-cents-per-gallon to 46 cents and generate $1.2 billion as part of the two-year, $7.4 billion transportation budget. The reason behind the proposed increase is significant shortfall in the state’s road and bridge maintenance budget — something the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) looks to quickly approach $1 billion by 2030 if unabated.Last week the Ohio House responded to the governor’s proposal with a 71 to 27 vote to raise the tax on gas 10.7 cents with a two-year phase in period, making the tax on gas $0.387 per gallon. In addition, the House:Increased the tax for on-road diesel by 20 cents over a three-year phase in period, making the tax on on-road diesel $0.48 per gallon.Added a provision putting compressed natural gas to the list of taxable motor fuels.Added an electronic vehicle registration fee of $200 and a hybrid vehicle registration fee of $100.Stipulated that 55% of revenue generated will be distributed to the state and 45% will be to local governments.Combined, the revenue increases in the House will generate $872 million. The transportation budget now heads to the Senate for consideration. It has to be signed by March 31.last_img read more

Twitter Might Make Some Noise With A SoundCloud Bid [Updated]

first_imgTags:#music#now#sharing#Soundcloud#twitter A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Related Posts center_img Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification selena larson Twitter is apparently again trying to engage our eardrums with a deal to buy audio sharing company SoundCloud, Recode reports. The deal would push forward Twitter’s music strategy, one that’s largely stagnated since the failure of Twitter #Music. SoundCloud, considered “YouTube for audio,” has 250 million monthly active listeners, a number comparable to Twitter’s user base. There’s undoubtedly some overlap there, but a SoundCloud acquisition could give Twitter an opportunity to diverge from its core product and provide a new sort of standalone social service without having to build it from scratch. SoundCloud is already the most popular music sharing service on Twitter, Recode notes. Twitter users share more links to SoundCloud than any other service, including Spotify. Both companies declined to comment. Update 5/20 1:30PM: The Wall Street Journal reports that Twitter backed out of the SoundCloud deal because “the numbers didn’t add up,” citing a person familiar with the matter.Image courtesy of Eric Wahlforss on Flickrlast_img read more
